Trappers Settle for Silver at the Huskies Classic

The North Bay U11AA Trappers flew through the tournament with 3 wins and one tie during the Friday and Saturday Round Robin, finishing first in their division, but headed home with a silver after a 2-1 overtime loss to the Oakville Rangers.

Friday’s games included a 3-1 win over the Burlington Golden Eagles thanks to 2 goals from Grady Royon. The Trappers defence battled hard in the second game and held off the Scarborough Ice raiders to just one goal for a 7-1 win.

Saturday’s games had Trapper’s goaltender Dylan Simmonds staring in net and he landed his first AA shutout against the Hamilton Huskies with a 10-0 win. In the afternoon they faced the Oakville Rangers, who were ranked number 2 in Ontario. Thanks to a great behind the net pass to Caleb Boucher, who one timed the puck deep into the net at the start of the second period, the Trappers took the lead, but couldn’t hold off the Rangers in the 3rd and settled for a 1-1 tie.

The team would face Copper Cliff, a familiar NOHA rival on Sunday in the semi finals. With a humble 4-1 win the Trappers were off to the Gold Medal Game for a rematch with the Oakville Rangers.

The final game saw Goaltender Logan ‘The Bear’ Claveau in net, who had an impressive .98 save percentage throughout the tournament. 4 minutes into the first period, Oren French put the Trappers on the board with a beautiful but sneaky, reverse wrap around goal. The score would remain 1-0 well into the 3rd, but the Rangers would not go down easy and scored tying the game 1-1. With 43 seconds left in regular play, Oren French passed to Defense man, John Langlois on the point, who slapped the puck to the net where forward Joe Fry was eagerly awaiting and nicely deflected the puck into the back of the net. The goal was later called back for goalie interference. The score remained 1-1, and brought the game into over time. With 11 seconds left the Rangers scored ending the Trappers battle for gold. A gentle reminder for the boys that, winning a tournament is not an easy feat and “we will just have to get em’ next time”!
